Preventive dentistry
is the area of dentistry that focuses on those procedures and life
practices that help people to prevent the beginning or progression of
oral disease. It includes at-home dental care performed by patients, as
well as dental care and education by professional dental staff in the
office or clinic.Preventive care, includes basic brushing and flossing,
sealant and fluoride application, mouth guards and regular visits to
the dentist every six months.
Flossing and inter dental cleaning:
Careful and frequent brushing with a
toothbrush helps to prevent build-up of plaque bacteria on the teeth.
Electric toothbrushes were developed, and initially recommended for
people with strength or dexterity problems in their hands, but they have
come into widespread general use. The effectiveness of electric
toothbrushes at reducing plaque formation and gingivitis is superior to
that of conventional manual toothbrushes.
Flossing and inter dental cleaning:
In addition to brushing, cleaning between teeth may help to prevent
build-up of plaque bacteria on the teeth. This may be done with dental
floss or inter dental brushes.
Mouth guard
A mouth guard protects the mouth from
bruxism (grinding of teeth) and from injury in contact sports like
soccer, boxing and ice hockey . For sports enthusiasts or people
diagnosed with bruxism, a mouth guard can help prevent long term dental problems
- Have a dental check-up at LEAST EVERY 6 MONTHS.
- Brush at least twice a day with soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Use an inter-dental brush daily to remove food particles in-between teeth.
- Use an anti-microbial mouth rinse to control gingivitis.
- Use artificial saliva gel to prevent dry mouth (dry mouth causes tooth decay).
- If your gums bleed when you brush or eat see your dentist.
